Spa, Belgium: A Private Chauffeur Programme to the City That Gave Its Name to Wellness

Spa — the Belgian town that literally gave its name to the concept of wellness — is 130km from Brussels in the Ardennes hills. FFGR Belgium designs private chauffeur programmes combining the Les Thermes de Spa wellness centre, the Spa-Francorchamps circuit, and Ardennes countryside.

The English word "spa" derives from this Belgian town in the Ardennes hills. It is one of the rare cases where a place-name has become a universal common noun — alongside champagne, cognac, and brie — and it happened because the mineral springs at this location attracted European royalty, aristocracy, and intelligentsia for three consecutive centuries. Peter the Great visited in 1717. Victor Hugo, Alexandre Dumas, and Casanova wrote about it. Queen Marie-Henriette of Belgium made it her summer residence.

What remains today is a small, graceful town of 10,000 inhabitants at 280 metres altitude in the Ardennes forest, with a thermal complex that has been rebuilt and expanded to contemporary standards while preserving its historical identity.

Les Thermes de Spa — the main thermal facility — occupies a building of considerable architectural ambition on the Colline d'Annette et Lubin, with views across the Ardennes from the terrace pools. The thermal programme includes indoor and outdoor pools fed by the town's mineral springs, treatment rooms with a full menu of massage, hydrotherapy, and spa rituals, and a hammam and sauna complex. Day programmes and half-day programmes are available without accommodation. FFGR Belgium coordinates day access reservations and times arrivals to avoid the facility's busiest periods (weekends, Belgian school holidays).

The Spa-Francorchamps Formula 1 circuit — discussed separately in our Circuit de Spa article — is 10 minutes from the town centre. For clients combining a morning at Les Thermes with an afternoon at the circuit (or vice versa), FFGR Belgium designs the programme accordingly.

The Ardennes landscape between Brussels and Spa — the Hautes Fagnes nature reserve, the Signal de Botrange (Belgium's highest point at 694 metres), the Baraque Michel plateau — adds natural spectacle to the transfer in both directions.

Brussels to Spa takes 90 minutes by private chauffeur on the E40/E42. A full day programme (thermal + circuit or thermal + Ardennes hiking programme) requires early departure.
